THESE are strange times for Chad L. Coleman, an actor and a resident of Brooklyn, whose name you probably do not recognize. But if you are one of the fervent few who have watched the HBO series “The Wire” over its past two seasons, his face will be familiar. Mr. Coleman, who plays a parolee trying to leave crime behind and start a boxing gym, knows that very well by now, from people jumping out of cars to greet him, stopping him on the subway or just grinning across a crowded coffee shop.

STORES; A Place for Bouquets and Blossoms by the Stem
By ELAINE LOUIE

Steven Buckwald, below left, the owner of Surroundings Flowers on the Upper West Side, is opening a shop today at the Apthorp — the first, he said, of 25 such stores planned for Manhattan in the next five years. There he will sell the same flowers that he puts into arrangements for clients like the Metropolitan Opera, for about a third of the price, or a 40 percent markup from cost. On Nov. 30 he will open a Harlem shop. Both shops will sell bouquets like the one with coral peonies and pink roses ($40), below right, as well as flowers priced by the stem. (If he pays 50 cents for a Gerbera daisy, he said, it will sell for 70 cents.) The Apthorp is at 2207 Broadway (78th Street); the Harlem shop is at 1351 Amsterdam Avenue (125th Street); (212) 580-8982. ELAINE LOUIE

Lonesome Blues on the Rikers Bus

Chang W. Lee/The New York Times

On East 149th Street near the Grand Concourse, women wait, sometimes with their children, to make a difficult journey.

Published: January 13, 2008
ON a recent Sunday morning, a 20-year-old woman named Christina Cruz walked up to a near-toothless, gray-haired man sitting on a portable bench on East 149th Street near the Grand Concourse. She held out a $10 bill.

“I need a round trip,” Ms. Cruz announced.

“Where to?” Sunney Leslie, the man on the bench, asked with a feigned look of wonder. Ms. Cruz, who was wearing a pink jacket patterned with cartoon characters, playfully smacked him on the shoulder.

There was, of course, only one stop on this particular trip. Handing over the $10, she stepped inside a blue van headed for Rikers Island.

Welcome to Harlem

Welcome to Harlem has just moved into its new space in the heart of the new Harlem.

Welcome to Harlem is the premier resource for visitors to this rapidly changing part of Manhattan.  Harlem is making a name for itself as one of the most dynamic and diverse neighborhoods in all of New York – people are flocking here to live, work, shop, see sights of historical and cultural interest, sample the food, be entertained, and simply to soak up the atmosphere.  Welcome to Harlem is here to serve them, and to nurture Harlem’s vibrant business and cultural communities.

We’re the first port of call for everyone taking the A, B, C, D, 2 or 3 trains or the hop-on/hop-off shuttle to our part of town.  We have deep roots in the neighborhood and excellent connections with the businesses, places of entertainment and amenities that give our community its unique character.

From our friendly, street-level space at 2360 Eighth Avenue (Frederick Douglass Boulevard), Welcome to Harlem experts – people who live Harlem as well as work here – provide guidance and help to individual visitors. We also customize Harlem-based trips, tours and events for travel professionals who themselves cater to individuals and groups visiting New York.  We have the intimate knowledge that allows us to tailor distinctive itineraries for the out-of-the-ordinary Harlem experience the city-wide tours simply can’t offer.

We are the link between the best of what Harlem has to offer and its guests, distributing information and promotional materials about local amenities.  We also provide advice and contact referrals for visitors interested in joining the Harlem community by living, working or starting a business in Happening Harlem.
