Playtime’s over as workers dismantle the beloved Tower of Toys yesterday.May 20, 2008 — What goes up must come down – even when it’s a beloved 65-foot tall tower of two-by-fours decorated with children’s toys.
About a dozen city Parks Department workers descended on the Tower of Toys on East Sixth Street and Avenue B in the East Village yesterday, dismantling one of the city’s most unusual pieces of public art.
According to the Parks Department, the tower had become unstable since creator Eddie Boros died last year at 74.
“The structure was not built according to code and is a public safety hazard,” said Parks Department spokeswoman Cristina DeLuca.
The tower, constructed of wood and festooned with dolls, toy horses, plastic cars and a grandfather clock, took shape in 1985 and since then had contributed to the East Village’s reputation as creative, bohemian and bizarre.
Parks workers arrived at the community garden where the tower stood at around 9 a.m. and worked steadily throughout the day.

May 20, 2008 — Just in time for summer’s throngs of pint-sized moviegoers come . . . higher ticket prices for kids.
Clearview Cinemas on First Avenue and 62nd Street last week stopped offering reduced-price tickets for children and seniors, charging $12 across the board – even for a matinee.
