The Polo Grounds in 1952. |
The Polo Grounds familiar to several sporting-minded generations of 20th Century New Yorkers was the fourth one, just off the old Harlem River Speedway at 155th St., built in 1911 atop the ashes of the lately burned-down third one, and for whole lifetimes it was the revered landmark home of the baseball Giants and, after 1925, the football Giants as well. |
They had in fact played polo at the Polo Grounds once upon a time, but that was at the long-gone first Polo Grounds down at the northern end of Central Park. |
Famed Polo Grounds, deserted by the Giants, went under the hammer in 1966. |
